Women’s Junior Chamber of
Commerce
Papers, Scrapbooks, Photographs,
1943 – 2001
(AR 1778)
The Birmingham
Women’s Junior Chamber of Commerce was organized
in 1943 by twenty young working women members, under
the mentorship of the Birmingham Women’s Chamber
of Commerce. The club’s objective was to
encourage civic pride and awareness, and to promote
civic programs and the welfare of the city. These
women represented a variety of businesses, including
hairdressers, secretaries, business-owners,
accountants, saleswomen, bankers, city and federal
workers, managers, and teachers. The organization
raised money for civic projects and the Salvation Army.
Politically, the group was moderately
conservative to moderately progressive. In the early
1960s they went on record to urge the reopening of the
city parks and recreational areas which had been closed
to enforce segregation. They often supported
other progressive city organizations like the Young
Men’s Business Club and the Committee of 100.
This collection contains minutes of meetings,
correspondence, financial records, newsletters, social
event memorabilia and records, photographs, and a few
scrapbooks. This collection also includes a large
amount of material on the National/Southeastern
Conference of Women in Chambers of Commerce.
