Dr. Graham Boettcher,
the William Cary Hulsey Curator of American Art at the
Birmingham Museum of Art, will discuss the Library's
exhibition Alabama
Illustrated: Engravings from 19th-Century Newspapers. He will explain how
illustrated newspapers portrayed Alabama and the South
and how
this portrayal--accurate
or not--formed readers' opinions about people, events,
and industry in Alabama in the 19th century.

Assistant Archivist at the Birmingham Public Library
and co-curator of the exhibition Alabama Illustrated: Engravings from 19th
century Newspapers, will discuss the engraving
techniques 19th-century newspaper printers used to
transmit an event, place, or
activity from reality to
illustration in a relatively short period of time. She
will discuss the fine arts techniques illustrators used
in creating their illustrations so that images not only
informed readers, but were fine examples of artistic
skill.
