Adler, Bertha Marx
Scrapbook, 1888-1889

Bertha Marx Adler was the daughter of Birmingham merchant Samuel Marx, one of the founders of Temple Emanu-El. In 1892 she married Samuel M. Adler, a Birmingham businessman and investor. This scrapbook is an atlas that Bertha Marx, then a young woman, converted to a scrapbook by pasting items over the pages. The scrapbook primarily contains programs from Birmingham theater productions, but also contains a few programs from Birmingham High School and an order of service from the 1889 dedication of Temple Emanu-El.

Birmingham Festival of Arts Association

The Birmingham Festival of Arts was established in 1951 by the Women’s Committee of the Birmingham Symphony. The annual event highlighted the history, culture and arts of a country and featured musical performances, dance, craft demonstrations, booths selling arts and souvenirs and visits from dignitaries. In 1998 the event was renamed the Birmingham International Festival. The collection includes correspondence and publications, educational material, newspaper clippings and other material.

Grambs, Fred L.

Fred L. Grambs was a music pioneer in early Birmingham, serving as director of his own band and as musical director at O’Brien’s Opera House and various religious institutions. These scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings and other material relating to Grambs and music in nineteenth and early twentieth century Birmingham.
