This collection contains sixteen letters, most written by Philip Minor of Greene County, Alabama to his wife, Eliza, during his service in the Confederate Army.

Murphy, Virgil S.
Autograph Album, 1865

Colonel Virgil S. Murphy of Montgomery, Alabama served with the Seventeenth Alabama Infantry, Confederate forces, during the American Civil War. Murphy was captured by Union forces at the age of twenty-eight at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee. He was held prisoner at Johnson Island (Ohio), on Lake Erie. This small volume contains autographs of Confederate soldiers, accompanied by each man's hometown and state, and sometimes rank or unit. These were apparently men held as prisoners at Johnson Island with Murphy. The volume also contains two poems (transcribed below), a pencil sketch of the prison and other material.

Oliver, William G.
Papers

Prior to the Civil War, William Oliver and his wife Susan lived in Coosa County, Alabama. Oliver joined the 34th Alabama Infantry and saw action is Tennessee and Georgia. During his military service Oliver regularly corresponded with his wife. After 1871, the Olivers relocated to Birmingham where he served as marshal and worked in real estate.

Parsons Family

This collection includes correspondence of Sarah E. Parsons and her husband W. A. Parsons, who served in the Civil War in the 12th Alabama Infantry Regiment and was killed in October 1864 at the Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia. Six letters written to Sarah from her husband appear to date from 1864. The collection also contains letters written by John M. Huey.

Henry Pope was a resident of Port Gibson, Mississippi and, later, Birmingham, Alabama. This scrapbook contains newspaper accounts of Civil War battles and related events. Most of the newspaper articles date from the Civil War period.

This collection contains two muster rolls, one for the 20th Regiment, 4th Brigade, Alabama Volunteers dated September 9, 1861 and one for the 6th Company, 14th [?] Regiment, Alabama Volunteers dated 1862. The 1862 roll is badly faded and difficult to read.
